THE NEW DEFCON badges are designed to be cool and to, as always, thwart the guy who counterfeits them no matter what they look like. This year, they went high tech, ICs, LEDs, and a logo cut right out of the PCB. They built 6055 of them at a cost of under $5 per badge, with a design goal of being a true bitch to counterfeit as well as have a battery that lasts at least as long as Defcon itself. [ continue ]

Defcon is off to an incredibly slow start; It’s already 2 hours behind because of safety inspections (not surprising). I wouldn’t be too annoyed, but the first talk of the day is Joe Grand explaining the LED badges. They apparently made 6,055 of these LED badges. There is a PIC10F202 on the back and a switch to change between different flash modes. He even included solder pads to reprogram it. They’re encouraging people to hack the badges and come up with something new. More pictures after the break. [ continue ]

The thousands of people who waited an hour or more to get into Defcon drove home what a hot ticket this 14-year-old computer-hacking event has become. In years past, when would-be attendees couldn’t afford the admission price, they put their hacking skills to work by creating counterfeit badges. This year, organizers turned to Joe Grand, a designer of consumer electronics hardware, to come up with something that couldn’t be easily duplicated. Admission this year costs $100. [ continue ]
