This year’s Defcon computer security convention had a high-tech badge for an equally high-tech crowd. The circular badge was a colored circuit board complete with a small computer chip, battery and two blinking LED lights. Defcon staff wanted the badge to be difficult to counterfeit, but easy enough to add some interesting hacks.

For a novel twist on the staid idea of a conference badge, Defcon organizers turned to Joe Grand (alias “Kingpin”). Grand designed a badge that was a circuit board with built-in LEDs and a holder for a battery. It was manufactured by E-Teknet, pictured in this photograph, and was intended to be difficult to forge.

In retrospect, it was probably a mistake to arrive at DEFCON 14 early Friday morning in hopes of avoiding some of the crowd at registration. Nonetheless, in spite of several spurts, sputters, and delays, it is now safe to say that the occasionally ordered chaos that is DEFCON 14, the largest hacker’s conference in the world, is off and running.
