DEFCON 27 Badge Turned Into Social Distancing Reminder

Monday, Sep 14th, 2020

Grand Idea Studio has created a social distancing reminder using the DEFCON 27 Badge. In 2019, the badge was the official attendee badge for DEFCON, the world’s largest and oldest continuously running hacker conference. It served as a game for attendees to play during the event and interacted with other badges using a short-range wireless communication technology.

With updated firmware, the badge provides an audible and visual alert when it is within range of another badge. It also stores that badge’s unique identifier in a non-volatile badge log for contact tracing purposes. The badge’s design is completely open source, allowing it to be freely used by others.

The DEFCON 27 Badge is not intended for use in the mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease.
